When items such as old cars, household appliances, farm, office, and industrial equipment, ships and railway wagons, buildings and bridges complete their useful life, they take on a new value as important manufacturing material known as scrap metal or, specifically, "ferrous" scrap (the word ferrous is derived from the Latin word "ferrum" meaning iron).

Ferrous scrap might come from a demolition site, shipyard, auto dismantler, or even your house. Manufacturing plants also generate industrial scrap such as stampings left over when appliance parts are made during the manufacturing process or when a hole is drilled in a steel plate.

Iron and steel can be processed and remelted repeatedly for the manufacture of an almost unlimited range of new objects for use by industry and individual consumers alike.
